Ancient Maps & Ptolemy

The earliest known maps date back to ancient Babylon around 600 BCE, but it was Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE who transformed cartography into a systematic science with his coordinate system.

Ptolemy's Geographia established the use of latitude and longitude, map projections, and mathematical approaches to representing the curved Earth on a flat surface.
