SΓΈren Kierkegaard (1813β1855) is widely regarded as the father of existentialism. Writing against Hegel's grand systematic philosophy, he insisted on the primacy of individual subjective experience and the anxiety of free choice.
His three stages of existence β aesthetic, ethical, and religious β describe paths through life that require leaps of commitment rather than logical progression.
