Equivalence Principle

The equivalence principle is the conceptual foundation of general relativity. Einstein realized that a freely falling observer experiences no gravitational field locally — they float weightless, just as in deep space far from any mass.

This insight transforms gravity from a force into a geometric property of spacetime. Objects in free fall follow the natural contours of curved spacetime, and what we perceive as gravitational acceleration is the curvature itself.
