Weathering breaks down rocks in place through mechanical, chemical, and biological processes. Erosion then transports this material across the landscape by water, wind, ice, and gravity.

Together, these processes sculpt Earth's surface over geological time, wearing down mountains and depositing sediment that builds new landforms elsewhere.
