The Heian period (794–1185 CE) was an era of cultural refinement in which the imperial court at Kyoto cultivated sophisticated arts, literature, and aesthetic sensibilities.

Women of the court produced some of Japan's greatest literary works, including The Tale of Genji and The Pillow Book, while the aristocracy developed elaborate systems of etiquette and artistic expression.
