Nuclear Structure

The atomic nucleus is a dense core of protons and neutrons held together by the strong nuclear force. Understanding nuclear structure requires examining how nucleons arrange themselves into energy levels and shells, much like electrons in atomic orbitals.

The stability of a nucleus depends on the balance between the attractive strong force and the repulsive electromagnetic force between protons, giving rise to the valley of stability and the concept of binding energy per nucleon.
