Rise of the Ottomans

The Ottoman Empire began as a small Turkic beylik in northwestern Anatolia around 1299. Under Osman I and his successors, it grew rapidly by combining military prowess with pragmatic governance, incorporating diverse peoples under a flexible imperial system.

By the late 14th century, the Ottomans had crossed into Europe and established themselves as the dominant power in the eastern Mediterranean.
