Cyrus & the Achaemenids
Cyrus the Great founded the Achaemenid Empire around 550 BCE, creating what would become the largest empire the world had yet seen. His policy of tolerance toward conquered peoples set the Persian Empire apart from its predecessors.
The Achaemenid dynasty ruled for over two centuries, building monumental cities like Persepolis and establishing an efficient system of satrapies to govern their vast territories.
