Saussure & Peirce

Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce independently founded modern semiotics in the early 20th century. Saussure's structural linguistics introduced the signifier/signified pair, while Peirce developed a triadic model distinguishing icons, indices, and symbols.
